FAQ's About July Tryouts
1Why are tryouts in July?
The Great Lakes Region of USA Volleyball moved the tryout dates in May of 2021 to July. The move was made to help eliminate the challenges of holding tryouts at the end of the high school season as well as curb illegal recruiting that was taking place in high school gyms.
2Will You Hold Fall Tryouts?
Yes, we will hold Fall Tryouts for any open roster positions that are available after the summer tryout. We can also expand the number of teams we offer if needed.
3What if we are out of town?
If you cannot attend the scheduled tryout dates and times, don't worry! We have a make-up tryout scheduled on July 25th. If you cannot attend that tryout, contact our staff and we will arrange a private tryout session. ALL players MUST be registered prior to the scheduled tryout in order to be considered!
4When does the actual season start?
The season will not start until the first December ... the same as in years past. For U10-U14, we will have some optional training activities during the fall for our selected players. U15-U18 will not as those activities are illegal under IHSA and WIAA bylaws.
5When will dues be paid?
If selected you will have to pay the commitment fee in the days following the tryout (standard procedure). This year we will offer two different payment plans. One that starts November 15th with 4 installments. The second will start August 15th with 7 installments.
What To During At Tryouts
1When is check-in?
Check-in is 30 minutes prior to the scheduled tryout time. We ask that players arrive on time as the check-in process has several steps to ensure athletes are placed and evaluated properly.
2What should we bring?
You just need to come ready to play with your normal volleyball gear! VC United will provide a tryout t-shirt and bib number during check-in. No paperwork is required at the tryout. Check-in will begin 30 minutes prior to your scheduled tryout. We do ask the players bring their own water bottle.
3Is there a parent meeting?
Yes! Club Director Eric Schulze will conduct a brief 30 minute parent informational meeting at the beginning of each tryout.
4Can parents stay at the tryout?
Yes! There will be tables and chairs available in the lobby area and the cafe will be open. Parents are not allowed on the court at any time.
5What happens at the tryout?
Players will conduct a series of evaluations ranging from skills, athleticism, and game play. No feedback/coaching will be provided to the athletes during the evaluations. The purpose of the tryout is to evaluate the athletes so the drills are designed to be "slower" than a normal practice.
What To Expect After Tryouts
1How are selections made?
Selections are made after evaluating the athletes in the pool for Girls' Elite, Girls' Premier, and Girls' Regional. Selections are first posted on our website and then emailed out to each athlete.
2When do we have to commit?
Players will be given 48 hours to make their commitment from the time they receive an offer. The first step will be a "verbal" commitment. The second step will be the official commitment that requires each athlete to pay their commitment fee and sign our contracts and codes of conduct.
3Will we know which team we made?
No ... we are only selecting the pool of athletes for each program (Girls' Elite, Girls' Premier, and Girls' Regional) at tryouts. In December we will complete the team evaluation phase the first two weeks of the season and players will be placed on their teams at that time.
4How do we order uniforms?
For Summer Tryouts, we will have a uniform sizing day at our facility in early August. For Fall Tryouts, sizing will be completed at the tryout. After sizing is completed, an email will be sent home to order uniforms for the season. All orders must be placed during the designated time.
5When is the Season Kick-Off meeting?
Yes, we will conduct a Season Kick-Off Meeting on November 14th prior to practices starting. We will cover the details regarding the tournament schedule, coaching staff assignments, and more at that time.

Collegiate Player Development
The Girls' Elite Program is to be considered by athletes who are looking to train and compete nationally at the highest level in club and aspire to play in college. Teams are trained by our most experienced coaches.

U12-U18 Age Groups
Girls' Elite is offered for 6th Grade - 12th Grade players.
3 Practices/Week
Elite has 1 Flex Practice (Mon) and 2 Team Practices (Tue/Thu) per week.

We offer comprehensive College Recruiting Support including highlight videos.
National Tournaments
We attend "national" level events to maximize exposure and competition.
Strength Training
Our athletes train in a 9,000 sq. ft. weight "room" using Sparta Science.
Whole Athlete Training

Courtney Slinko
Girls' Elite Technical Director
Courtney brings nearly 30 years of coaching and playing experience to our Girls' Elite program. She's played (Michigan State) and coached (Marquette) collegiately and was also a member of the USA Women's National team. She's been coaching club/HS for 20 years.

Bryanna Weiskircher
Girls' Premier Technical Director
Bryanna is a Rockford native and played both professionally (Germany) and collegiately (Penn State University). Known for her knowledge of the game and her organizational skills, Bryanna lead the Premier Program in 2020-21.

Regional Program
Fundamental Player Development
Girls' Regional Teams are an ideal starting point for middle school and high school players looking to get started with club volleyball. Practices are spent working on individual skills with an emphasis on team play in a fun, positive environment.
U10-U17 Age Groups
Girls' Regional is offered for 4th Grade - 11th Grade players.
1-2 Practices/Week
Regional has 2 Team Practices per week unless they are playing on Sunday.
Regional Tournaments
We attend solid "local" events like the Power Up Series out of Rockford, IL.
Optional Strength Training
Our athletes can opt-in to Strength Training with Oak Performance (additional fee).

Jennifer Charles took over the Girls' Regional Program during the 2020 season. A former collegiate player (Western Illinois), Jen is currently the Varsity coach at Sycamore HS and has over 15 years of club coaching experience.
